In the opening UCI
World Cup race of the season in Waterloo,
Puck Pieterse showed little signs of rust as she took home a second-place finish behind winner
Fem van Empel.
“I made a number of mistakes in the initial phase, my cross technique clearly let me down. It's only been a week since I was on the MTB, which is difficult," the 21-year-old Dutch national champion and World Championship runner-up assessed in her post-race interview in quotes collected by Wielerflits.
After my mistakes, Fem had a gap and I could no longer return to her rear wheel," Pieterse continues. Despite missing out on victory, the Dutchwoman nevertheless, thoroughly enjoyed her return to cyclocross action and a big part of that was the American crowds in attendance.
“It was a very nice race, I enjoyed myself. The American fans were enthusiastic. In the end, I also finished on the podium, which is good. Now I'm going home and going to sleep, it will be a lot of jet lag," she concludes. “I'm going home now, where we will finish the rest of the season. Overijse is on the menu next weekend, which will not be an easy race. But the smile is always there.”
