New UCI points rule proves game-changer as teams look to Cyclocross and MTB - Red Bull-BORA Hansgrohe looks beyond road cycling

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe continues to broaden its horizons beyond road cycling. The German team is strengthening its commitment to a multidisciplinary model, with a strategy focused on recruiting talent from mountain biking and cyclocross, two disciplines playing an increasingly important role in major cycling projects.
The move reflects a growing trend in the international peloton, where several teams are looking to develop riders capable of competing across different terrains. The aim is not only to discover new talent, but also to harness skills gained off-road to improve performance in road races.
In this respect, Red Bull is following a path similar to Alpecin-Premier Tech, a team that has shown how different disciplines can coexist within the same sporting project. Combining road racing, MTB and cyclocross can broaden riders’ development opportunities and keep the team competitive for much of the year.
Adrien Boichis is one example of this philosophy, ESMTB reports, representing the link between disciplines at the highest level. His presence shows how multidisciplinary projects can offer young mountain bikers a path to grow without closing the door on other specialities.

New UCI rules could boost multidisciplinary projects

The off-road strategy also has a longer-term dimension. New Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) rules, due to come into force in 2027, will provide an added incentive for teams pursuing this kind of project and strengthen their interest in developing riders who can perform across different disciplines.

Mountain biking and cyclocross develop specific qualities that can prove valuable in modern cycling.
Technical skill, the ability to manage intense efforts and adaptability to changing terrain are among the attributes teams may seek in riders from these disciplines.

New channels for talent recruitment

For Red Bull, broadening its strategy also means opening new channels for talent recruitment. Rather than limiting its search to traditional road categories, the team can keep a close eye on riders who have already shown their potential in other disciplines and support their sporting development.
The move confirms that multidisciplinary development has become one of the professional peloton’s key pathways.
With Alpecin-Premier Tech as a model and the new UCI rules on the horizon, Red Bull-BORA aims to establish a system in which MTB and cyclocross are not secondary activities, but integral parts of a broader sporting project.
