Vincenzo Nibali has in the past attempted to become World champion, namely in Firenze 2013 where he came fourth, however he may give it one more shot in the 2022 Wollongong World championships - or at least, play a crucial role for the Italian national team.
“Me at the World Championship? It is an idea that I like. In Australia I debuted with the national team in 2010, " the Italian told Gazzetta dello Sport. Having shown very high level recently, he would be a good option for the World championships course, being a specialist over long distances - suited to the 266-kilometer route which is set to include a fair bit of climbing throughout.
Nibali also revealed that he received a proposal from Giro d'Italia organizers RCS Sport, and has said that "it would be nice to be an ambassador of the Giro." Having been one of the race's leading figures over it's history, winning the 2013 and 2016 editions aswell as finishing on the podium on four other other occasions over the 2010's.
The 'Shark' has had a tremendous comeback this year at the Giro, having announced his retirement in his home town of Messina on stage five and subsequently ride to a level that he had not achieved for years, riding up to fourth in the final classification.
