In his first mountain top finish since abandoning the Giro d'Italia, Remco Evenepoel looked to be a bit rusty. Although he finished stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse in 4th position, that doesn't tell the full story.
Attacking early-on on the final climb, Evenepoel was then joined and subsequently dropped by both Mattias Skjelmose and Felix Gall. "I slept well. We analysed the course again. I made a little too much hay. The riders in the wheel were able to take advantage of that a bit and therefore I had a bad moment. We won't make that mistake again this week. Although yesterday was more about testing myself anyway," he told Het Laatste Nieuws before the start of stage 4.
With another day full of climbing ahead of him, it's key for Evenepoel that he bounces back, something he is both very keen to do and very confident in his ability to do so. “It is a nice finish, a little more up and down and steeper than yesterday,” he explains. “I know my final kick is good, I might be one of the better riders at the finish. I can bet on that."
"I can definitely go for a stage and a classification, especially with the time trial in mind," Evenepoel concludes already seemingly having put the disappointment to the back of his mind. "No need to panic.”
