The Tour de France was expected to, and is having the main battle between Tadej Pogacar and Jumbo-Visma for the overall win. Behind them sit INEOS Grenadiers with third, fourth, seventh and tenth in the overall classification after six tricky days and the first mountain stage.
Geraint Thomas, fifth at Planche des Belles Filles and third in the overall classification, has told Cyclingnews after the finish: “It’s good that we’re all there. We haven’t done a proper mountain stage yet and we’re in there. Going into the next two weeks we’ll try to use those numbers well and not just attack at random.”
Although Daniel Martínez didn't perform to expectations, the team keep him in tenth place. Having avoided the crashes and unnecessary time losses over the first and more tense days, they also have Adam Yates sitting in fourth place and Tom Pidcock in seventh. An advantage to the British team, however one that won't be easy to put to the test against such strong competition.
“In 2019 it was a similar thing. I’m happy to have been in the mix,” Thomas said regarding the final climb. "Obviously Pogačar is strong. He can ride the cobbles, sprint on uphill finishes, and can win sprints, he’s got it all. He has Majka who is riding well and Bennett is decent, too."
"But the rest were struggling at climbing, so hopefully we can use our numbers on him at some point. We’re going to definitely try and we’ve got three guys to try it," he pointed out. Bernard Hinault has said that both Jumbo-Visma and INEOS Grenadiers have to ally in order to beat the Slovenian recently.
“Of course it’s not just Pogačar we’ve got to try and beat. Jumbo-Visma are also strong. But we’re in the mix, which is the main thing. We’re there or there or thereabouts, so we can definitely try to use those numbers," Thomas concluded.
