Adam Yates pushed the pace to the limit but victory was not possible. Against an in-form Primoz Roglic, the
UAE Team Emirates rider could only ride to second at the
Vuelta a Burgos.
“Overall I’m happy with the result. Obviously the stage win would have been nice but we know how good Roglic is in those situations at the finish," Yates admits at the end of the day in the Lagunas de Neila finale. "I gave my best and as a team we rode well, I think we showed that by winning the team prize. It was super hot all week so it made the racing that bit harder too."
On stage 3 at Picon Blanco Yates had already tested the Slovenian with an all-out attack, UAE had the numbers but ultimately the climbs were too hard for tactical play and Roglic always managed to respond. On the final and queen stage, Domen Novak and Jay Vine set up a move for the Briton, however Roglic and Aleksandr Vlasov managed to follow in the wheels.
He sprinted to second place on the day, and second in the overall classification. A good result and set of performances in his comeback after the Tour de France where he finished third, Yates will be carrying good form into the Deutschland Tour where he is the reigning champion. "We’ll focus now on the last goals of the season," he concludes.
