Stage 9 of the 2023
Tour de France saw the return of one of the race's most historic climbs, the Puy de Dome. The drama that entailed was certainly worth waiting for as
Michael Woods took a stunning stage win whilst
Tadej Pogacar gained more time back on
Jonas Vingegaard.
Beginning the final climb a minute and forty seconds behind the solo leader,
Matteo Jorgenson, not many would have predicted a victory for Woods. But the Canadian continued the show the great climbing legs he has displayed throughout 2023 to fightback and take the win. Many minutes later the GC battle commenced. Although the time gaps weren't massive (just 8 seconds between Pogacar and Vingegaard), the Jumbo-Visma leader's advantage at the top of the GC has been slashed.
