The Superprestige Boom was the second race for Mathieu van der Poel this winter, but the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider has crashed inside the second lap of the race and has been forced to abandon with possible injuries.
In a left turn onto a cobbled section van der Poel slid out together with Tom Pidcock, apparently injuring himself in the left leg. He picked the bike back up, but has clearly abandoned any competitive ambitions for the day.
Update: Despite rough images when the first crash happened, with difficulties walking and getting up on the bike, van der Poel soldiered on and made his way back through the field, managing to even take time on race winner Tom Pidcock, and finishing the race in 13th position.
