Mads Pedersen is a strong time-trialist but his victory at the time-trial national championships in Denmark came as a surprise. Perhaps more surprisingly is that he did this whilst in the middle of the race colliding with a 13-year old spectator at high-speed and avoiding a crash.
However the situation was not as consequence-free as it could initially sound. Video footage collected by DR showed the incident during the time-trial in which the Lidl-Trek rider reportedly had to overtake a race motorbike before a left-hand corner and then went in too fast, having to climb up a curb to avoid crashing.
In the curb were several spectators and Pedersen collided with one of them, maintaining himself on the bike but taking down the spectator in the process in what looked to be a violent collision.
Jens Kasler, event manager, spoke to the Danish news outlet to further explain what happened exactly: "Mads Pedersen catches up with the police motorcycle that should be in front of him. That's what shouldn't happen, but that's what happens. And then to avoid being cornered by the motorcycle, there's only one option, and that's to ride up there. It's incredibly annoying". Luckily however, it has also been reported that the child was not injured as a result of the incident.
