An emotional
Michael Matthews repaid the hard work of his
Team Jayco AlUla teammates by securing his first win since the 2022 Tour de France in a reduced bunch sprint on stage 3 of the
Giro d'Italia.
Working hard on the front of the peloton for most of the day, Jayco AlUla kept the pace high and tried their best to drop as many of the peloton's top sprinters as they could. Whilst many, such as Mark Cavendish were indeed forced to wait for another chance on another day, both
Mads Pedersen and
Kaden Groves were able to hang on meaning Matthews wouldn't have it all his own way in the final sprint.
Although
Trek - Segafredo took to the front in order to give Pedersen the best lead out possible, Matthews was able to come around his Danish sprint rival and secure a brilliant victory. A frustrated Pedersen was forced to settle for second whilst Groves, for the second straight day was left with a third-placed finish.
