Víctor Hugo Peña: "I do not understand what happened, what was the cruelty with Nairo Quintana"

Víctor Hugo Peña is a Colombian cycling legend who even won a stage of the Giro d'Italia. He knows his country's cycling to perfection and in a recent interview for Tribuna Deportiva he spoke about the difficult situation that his compatriot Nairo Quintana is going through.

Peña, on the one hand, says he does not understand what he is going through: "I do not understand what happened, what was the cruelty with Nairo Quintana, it is a strong test that he is going through, perhaps the hardest of his career. Only he will know if he will be able to go through it".

Lance Armstrong's former teammate at US Postal believes one of the reasons that could keep Nairoman without a team is his high cache:

"He's a rider that any team would want to have. He is also a rider with a high salary, his cache is high, I don't know how they are negotiating that issue, if suddenly the teams don't offer him enough money, but it's a very complicated situation.

Was Nairo Quintana wrong to protest, to ask for that sample? Peña believes he wasn't, but his advisors were: "Not Nairo, but the people around him. I am convinced that if Nairo Quintana had not had that entourage that accompanies him it would be different. Those advisors who are behind him really want to shine with that super athlete and they do it badly, because the one who shines is Nairo."

And he went further: "They throw him to Nairo to do the fight and leave him alone. He went against the system".
