Ilan Van Wilder, before another decisive stage in the Giro: "My legs are good now, I hope to show it again"

Ilan van Wilder arrived at the Giro d'Italia as the main support for Remco Evenepoel in the mountains. However, the abandonment of the Belgian and six other teammates has left him alone in the Corsa Rosa alongside Pieter Serry. He says he is very well prepared for the third week of the race:

"I've worked very hard to get in shape for this grand tour, especially for the last week, so I think my legs are good now, so hopefully I can show it again. I have the experience from last year and I have improved my condition as well.

On the strategy to follow in stage 18, he thinks the best option for him is to stay with those in the general classification and see how far he can hold on. He doesn't think getting into the breakaway at the start is a good idea:

"Going in the initial breakaway is not easy for me, you can win it all or lose it all, as we saw with Jack Haig and Paret Peintre, I think I will put the focus on giving it my all on the final climbs with the best riders, I have already proven I can do it, I will try to get the best possible result in the stage."

Finally, he was asked before the start about the strategy of those in the general classification on stage 18 and said the following:

"INEOS is going to try to control the stage, everything will depend on what UAE and Jumbo try to do, if they go for the stage or let it go, in any case they will go full throttle on the last climb."
