Just a day after a frightening mass crash saw the likes of Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and
Remco Evenepoel crash out of the
Itzulia Basque Country,
Mikel Landa has now suffered a similar fate.
The
Soudal - Quick-Step man had initially been working as Evenepoel's domestique although, after the crash, Landa had a chance for himself. Before the TV cameras began rolling on Discovery+ though, a crash has taken out the Basque rider from his home race. "Fall near Mañaria in which several cyclists have been involved.
Among them is Mikel Landa who abandons the race," writes an official update from the Itzulia Basque Country's social media.
Footage soon emerged of Landa being taken into an ambulance on a stretcher, and Soudal - Quick-Step have since confirmed the injuries sustained. "Mikel, runner-up at the Volta a Catalunya last month, was taken to the local hospital where X-rays revealed that he has suffered a fracture to his clavicle. He will now undergo further investigation to determine the best path for his recovery," announce the team.
Also involved was
Gil Gelders. "Gelders was given medical attention on the spot and was treated for abrasions," it is said. "We wish both riders well."
