UAE Team Emirates - XRG had Juan Ayuso, João Almeida, Jay Vine, Mikkel Bjerg and a strong set of riders which they put to full use to win stage 5 of the
Vuelta a Espana. however it was not enough to overtake their main rival, as Jonas Vingegaard has ridden himself back into the race lead.
The 24-kilometer effort featured a bit of wind but the route was not technical and dry. Nevertheless the wind still led to a significant crash for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe who have seen Matteo Sobrero crash hard and hit his head during their effort.
Israel - Premier Tech also had their effort disrupted by an ongoing protest against the team, losing meaningful time because of it and creating a difficult situation for the race. Competition wise Lidl-Trek took a strong lead early on in the race and they had good chances of taking a win, but the two main favourites - Visma and UAE - were amongst the last to finish.
The red jersey was also up for grabs as David Gaudu's Groupama-FDJ did not have the firepower to contest with the big teams on the block.
UAE Team Emirates - XRG had their full lineup still in the race and they have used every rider in the best possible way, putting in a stupendous time to remove 9 seconds off the American team and head towards a certain victory. Visma, down a rider at the start of the day, did their best to limit the losses - the Dutch team lost 8 seconds at the finish line.
