Before the race everyone had in mind that UAE Team Emirates would make Milano-Sanremo as hard as possible. This happened, but team DS Mauro Gianetti believes that the team's plan ultimately was it's downfall as the rest of the competition focused on just following Tadej Pogacar.
"Everyone was looking at Tadej, but in the end we got a great winner," team DS Mauro Gianetti told Sporza. "And there was another champion: Van der Poel. Working for Philipsen with the rainbow jersey is great. That is a real race, really special. We'll try again next year. With Tadej's first attack many more could follow, but with the second they had a much more difficult time."
The team pushed the pace in the Tre Capi, making significant damage, and in the first half of the Cipressa many were taken to the limit. However there were problems when it came to keeping the pace high as a few riders were missing in the uphill sections. The team still attacked hard but it was not able to maintain long sustained efforts that would fit Pogacar better. He was ultimately not able to make a decisive difference in the Poggio.
"Tom Pidcock then rode very fast in the descent and then Tadej decided to gamble on his sprint, despite the presence of Philipsen," Gianetti explains. "But again, what Van der Poel did: really punishment. He deserves a good beer from Jasper. Tadej and Jasper are good friends, but the great thing is that they can really challenge each other during a race to win. He also has that with Van der Poel. That is what makes cycling so beautiful."
