Sam Welsford has won stage 3 of the Tour Down Under. The BORA - hansgrohe sprinter was the fastest once again in the second bunch sprint of the race.
The race has started with a breakaway of three riders, Axel Mariault (Cofidis), Stefan de Bod (EF Edcuation-EasyPost) and Tristan Saunders (Australian national team), The trio was never a threat to the stage win.
They were eventually reeled in by peloton with a whole 32 kilometers to go. A crash took place with 13 kilometers to go including Luke Plapp who was on the attack yesterday.
However, despite the fast run-in to the line, BORA - hansgrohe were once again in control and did a textbook leadout. Danny van Poppel led the charge to the line, and Sam Welsford hit the wind with enough speed to hold off the rest of the field. He finished ahead of Elia Viviani and Dan McLay to take his second victory of the week.
