The early breakaway went off with Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo), Nils Brun (Switzerland), Diego Lopez (Equipo Kern Pharma) and Baptiste Planckaert (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux). It wasn't a threatening group, with the last survivors making it until the 20 kilometer to go mark as the pace increased in the peloton.
Despite the hilly terrain, there weren't attacks in the approach to the finish, and a bunch sprint was expected towards the finale as INEOS Grenadiers unsuccessfully tried to split the bunch. Without the presence of any strong leadout, it turned a chaotic finale in the final kilometer as several teams swarmed the narrow final straight.
INEOS managed to take hold of the head of the peloton into the final meters, and Ethan Hayter had the power once he launched the sprint to take the win. He beat
Jon Aberasturi and
Fernando Gaviria to the line.
