Tom Pidcock gets a 'nice reality check' on opening stage of 2025 Vuelta a Andalucia: "A little too enthusiastic"

In a thrilling finale, Maxim van Gils took victory on the opening stage of the 2025 Vuelta a Andalucia. A few moments later, Tom Pidcock crossed the line visibly frustrated to be part of the second group in 8th, losing nearly 40 seconds to the eventual stage winner.

After a stunning start to life at the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team over in Saudi Arabia, where he won two stages and the overall at the AlUla Tour, Pidcock was brought back down with a bump by this result. "Nice reality check back on European soil today," the British star reflects afterwards on his official Instagram account. "A little too enthusiastic on stage 1 of Vuelta a Andalucia today."

With more stages to come, the race is far from decided on stage 1. As such, Pidcock isn't letting himself get completely downhearted by this opening setback. "Great support from the boys out there today, we go again tomorrow," concludes the double Olympic champion determinedly.
