Tom Pidcock faces three hidden GC dangers after latest finish goes to sprinters in Guangxi - Could it cost British rider?

Stage 4 of the 2026 Tour of Guangxi offered the perfect opportunity for the general classification contenders and outsiders to steal a march and have some fun of their own after watching the sprinters reap the rewards over the first three days.
However, after some huffing and puffing, the peloton settled into an eventual bunch sprint as the fast men couldn't believe their luck as they were afforded a slightly unexpected chance to fight for the win - with Paul Magnier taking a second stage win of the race.
What makes it interesting, however, is that Saturday's stage five is once again a profile matching the sprinters, meaning that the stage six finale will likely be the only chance for general classification riders to make a winning move.
Such is the bluntness of the Tour of Guangxi route as a whole, it seems like Tom Pidcock, Juan Ayuso, Jhonatan Narvaez and the rest's only battle will be the final kilometres of the whole race - which finishes on a 3.1 kilometre climb with an average gradient of over 7.3 percent.

Minimal opportunity to take gains over GC rivals
The limited opportunity means that it's set to come down to fine margins. With multiple strong contenders in play, bonus seconds at the finish line could well play a major role in deciding the winner on Sunday.
During stage four, Louis Barre and Kevin Vauquelin seemed alert to the danger as well as potential gains in a daring move, attacking with 36 kilometres to go in hopes of stealing a march on the peloton and putting themselves in the general classification driving seat. However, it was ultimately snuffed out as several teams worked to reel them in.
That's where a hidden danger comes into view for Tom Pidcock. Although the British rider is no outsider in mountain sprint finish like Sunday's, it could prove futile if the contenders come to the line together and those bonus seconds aren't in play.

Jhonatan Narvaez and Neilson Powless are two riders who will worry Pidcock. The pair took bonus seconds oon the opening stage and sit 22 seconds off the lead in 8th and 9th, compared to Pidcock's 25 seconds in 12th and Ayuso's 26 seconds in 35th place. It's worth noting that the six of the top seven are sprinters or considered likely to not be competitive on the final day.
With such narrow windows to gain places in the race's only sorting of the overall hierarchy, another unexpected rival could be Enzo Paleni. His stage four breakaway exploits saw him take bonus seconds and move to fifth place at 20 seconds.
He's a strong time trialist but not to be underestimated in the hills with the motivation of a WorldTour overall victory. With still stage five to negotiate, it remains to be seen if those hidden dangers could prove costly for some general classification contenders.
