Tirreno-Adriatico: Filippo Ganna takes victory on rainy opening time-trial

Stage 1 of Tirreno-Adriatico was a time-trial that came under a lot of rain and weather changes, but big favourite Filippo Ganna took the victory for INEOS Grenadiers.

The rainy weather has made if a difficult day for some riders to commit, with some riders opting not to take risks such as Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock. The variating rain throughout the afternoon saw some surprises, with the likes of Bruno Armirail and then Magnus Sheffield taking the lead.

Sheffield was a serious contender for the win. Brandon McNulty and Michael Hepburn have come very close to his time whilst Primoz Roglic set a strong time in the fight for the overall classification despite his lack of previous racing.

Lennard Kämna then took over the stage lead removing 3 seconds out of Sheffield's time. Several riders kept creeping into the Top10 but in the fight for the victory the threat was very clear, as Filippo Ganna took 10 seconds out of the best time in the intermediate split.

A whole 28 seconds is the time the Italian removed from Kämna's lead, a victory that was by no means tight. Kämna and Sheffield have hung on to second and third on the road.
