Thibau Nys is racing his first day of the season but it almost wouldn't be guessed by anyone. The Belgian has began his season like a rocket, taking a superb win on the GP Miguel Indurain.
Edoardo Zamperini, Harrison Wood, Jesús Herrada, Xabier Isasa, Anthon Charmig, Alan Jousseaume and Jambaljamts Sainbayar formed the day's breakaway, a strong group which did pose a threat to the peloton where a few teams put in the effort to try and control it properly.
With 30 kilometers to go already action was kicking off in the peloton with UAE having men on the move, Mauro Schmid as well. However the main attacks were left to the final ascents. Ion Izagirre launched an attack over the big final ascent but then crashed on the descent whilst Alex Aranburu also attacked downhill.
A group of four managed to escape the peloton and went into the final 600-meter ramp, seemingly to victory, but in the final meters of the ascent Nys came flying through the escapees and took a comfortable solo win in Estella. Alex Molenaar of Caja Rural surprised to a second place, beating Nys' teammate Andrea Bagioli who closed the podium.
