In modern cycling there is more and more climbing in the opening days of Grand Tours. If it's not a time-trial, then certainly we've got hills or even a stage for the climbers right from the start in all Grand Tours. In 2025 that trend is broken at the Tour de France with a day for the sprinters on stage 1 which will give away a now rare chance at the yellow jersey.

"It is not easy to compete against a Mathieu van der Poel lead-out. It is up to us to make a better plan for that and to do better than in previous years. Although I think we have done well in phases as well," Groenewegen said in an interview with In de Leiderstrui.

Team Jayco AlUla have in Elmar Reinders and Luka Mezgec the key support men for the Dutchman, a strong leadout, but nowadays many more teams have strong leadouts and it becomes often a fight for wheels of one leadout, instead. A tricky situation.

Groenewegen sacrificed a bit of pure speed for climbing legs back in 2023, in an attempt to better match the new wave of sprinters who can do almost anything. But in the end it wasn't worth the price. "Due to races that were just a little bit tougher than we wanted, things went the wrong way in 2023. With a Dauphiné added to that, I was just a little too much on the climbing side. I climbed very well in the Tour at the time, it was very easy and fun. But in the end, I didn't buy a victory for it," he explains.

"That's why we changed that and we did win. In the first week I was very good and we had put everything on that, to have the speed then", he said of this season, where he won the Dutch national championships and stage 6 of the Grand Boucle.

And in 2025, such a win could earn him a yellow jersey, a particular goal for the 31-year old: "This year, the Tour de France is already a great opportunity for sprinters with the first stage in line. And if you don't win that, there are still chances to win in the days after. The yellow jersey, that is what everyone is looking at. I want to stay fit for that in the spring".
