Neilson Powless has been one of the stars of the 2023 Tour de France in its early stages. As the race enters the Pyrenees though, his position at the top of the King of the Mountains classification will be challenged.
Currently sitting on 18 points, there are a grand total of 32 available on stage 5. After a busy few days of racing already in his legs though, will Powless once again try and get into the breakaway? “The first days through the Basque Country were great. The Basque fans provided a lot of energy. It's great to wear the mountain jersey," he tells Wielerflits. "It really is a childhood dream come true. I hope I can hold the jersey."
"The plan? Just grab even more mountain points,” continues the American from EF Education-EasyPost. “I'm still recovering well at the moment and the legs still feel pretty good, but we're only in the first week. There is a good chance that the refugees will stay ahead today. The KOM points are important, but that also makes it difficult to go for the stage victory.”
