Simone Velasco managed to out sprint his breakaway companions Bob Jungels (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Jonas Greggard(Uno-X) to get a breakaway win only 3 seconds before the peloton. The 27 years old Italian of Astana Qazaqstan Team made use of his speed in selective groups to get one of the best wins in his career.
"We saw before the stage that there was another roundabout shortly before the finish, and a right turn. After that corner, I immediately attacked and was able to win. "Of course it was a tough day. We rode full throttle all day. In the last kilometers, the peloton still came close, but we kept going" said Velasco in the post race interview.
Velasco who is in his second season with Astana dedicated this victory to one of Astana's caretakers Umberto Inselvini who had been with the Kazakhstan formation since 2013, that died last week at the age of 64.
'This victory is for him and his family", Velasco said after winning the 3rd stage of Volta a Comunitat Valenciana.
