Jonathan MIlan has been having the season of his life, winning throughout the whole year and having the Tour de France green jersey to show for now in his palmarès. It was not easy for the Lidl-Trek rider to recover from the Grand Boucle, however he has managed to do so and today he once again felt back to his best level and took the victory at the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen.
Milan has net his ninth win of the season, after winning at the Volta a Comunitat Valenciana, UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico, Criterium du Dauphiné and the Tour itself. He has cemented himself as an absolute winner and top sprinter in the world alongside the Belgians Jasper Philipsen and Tim Merlier. With the latter, Milan was to have another battle today. But the reality is that at the end of the very fast and chaotic Belgian semi-classic, the speeds were so high that only Dylan Groenewegen had the position to clash with Milan. But the Italian powerhouse had perfect positioning and brought in the victory for the American team.
"I'm really happy today with the first one, it's also something special. The team I have to say managed today really well, the speed was also pretty high in the first hour. But yeah, the finale was pretty chaotic, it was difficult to organize properly the leadout, many sprint trains that wanted to be in the front and I tried to go for the victory," MIlan said in a post-race interview. "We managed it really well and I'm really happy for this result I have to say".
He explained that after the Tour de France, which finished seven weeks ago, it wasn't easy to regain his best form, but this weekend he is set to battle for more triumphs on Belgian roads. "Yeah it was pretty difficult to recover for me, I was not having that bad the Tour of Germany in the middle, but I was hoping it'd go a bit better but my body was still recovering out from Tour. And now yeah, had some nice recovery after Germany, was pretty motivated to do these last races of the season with my teammates, bring home some nice results I have to say and have some fun." he concluded.
