Sjoerd Bax has won the 75th edition of the Trofeo Matteotti, denying Italian national champion Simone Velasco at the line.
With the breakaway being caught with 30km still to go of the day, it looked that in all likelihood a bunch sprint would decide the race. With 15km to go though, a leading trio of George Bennett, Andrii Ponomar and Davide Formolo were ahead the peloton.
They were unable to hold on to the finish line however, with UAE Team Emirates' Sjoerd Bax being the man to emerge victorious ahead of Italian national champion Simone Velasco and Lorenzo Rota.
