Simon Yates has so far ridden an exemplary race, however tomorrow will be the first real test for the Briton's form ahead of the stages that will be decisive for the race. The Team BikeExchange -Jayco leader has been in this position in the past, and experience has taught him that it is never good to have the responsibilities on his shoulders.
With the intent of not having the pressure build-up around him, Yates has told reporters: "let’s stay calm guys, let’s not read too much into this. [It’s a] little bit of a surprise, but we’ll take it as it comes. I’m not complaining," after a strong performance at the time-trial had him climb to second place in the overall classification.
In 2018 - through a different vertent - Yates dropped the competition at the Etna volcano, caught his teammate Esteban Chaves and gifted him the win. A similar situation isn't to be expected this Tuesday, however Yates is a favourite to jump onto the pink stage.
With a team that offers little mountain support in comparison with several rival teams, it will be seen if Yates will look to respond to moves in order to get himself in the lead of the race, or if he will play risky tactics and be cold regarding the wheels to cover.
