Robert Gesink retired at the end of last season after devoting two decades to professional cycling. Over the past months, he appeared on numerous shows and podcasts. Now that he took some time off the bike, Gesink is ready to evaluate his next steps.
"When I stopped racing, I was first proud, relieved and very curious about what was to come," Gesink tells NOS. "I first wanted peace with the family and I enjoy that. In the past few months I had to figure out what I wanted to do now."
In the meantime, there are 'some things coming up', according to Gesink. For example, he recently announced that he is going to write a book about his career. But there is more going on. "The door is open for a position at Visma | Lease a Bike," reveals the former cyclist.
The question remains what kind of function it will be. But Gesink will definitely not be getting into the team car. "Then I will be away too many days again. I always had trouble standing at an airport and seeing entire families going on holiday and having to go on the road again for a race. My children were also sad when I left again. So for me, it's enough now."
