Paul Lapeira has taken the victory at the Tour des Alpes Maritimes, an important triumph for Decathlon CMA CGM Team who continue to hold strong momentum in a month of February where they have taken several meaningful wins.
The start of the race, with some of the race's toughest climbs, was quite hard and fast, and it took a long time before a breakaway was formed. When this was the case, it was a group of 11 riders that posed too much of a threat with Nicolas Vinokourov, Guillaume Martin, Edoardo Zamperini, Jamie Meehan, Theo Lévêque, Harthijs de Vries, Axel Bouquet, Kenny Molly, Tom Mainguenaud, Maël Guégan and Valentin Darbellay.
The pace never slowed down and with 70 kilometers to go the catch was already made. A second breakaway attempt was reeled in with 44 kilometers to go on the day's main climb of the day - the Côte de Gourdon, 11.8 kilometers long at 4.6% - where Lenny Martínez, Marco Brenner, Ewen Costiou and Aurélien Paret-Peintre went off the front.
However, Martínez and Brenner had an extra gear and dropped the other two still on the climb. The duo entered the final 1.5-kilometer long slight ascent to the line in Biot together, but they were caught by a flying Paul Lapeira who attacked the chasing group from behind, followed by no-one and dropping the two front riders as well.
The Frenchman's explosive attack was impressive and although Christian Scaroni moved from behind to try and make the catch, he was unable to and had to settle for second place; whilst Simon Carr took a surprising third place for Cofidis.
