Results Eneco Tour 2026 Stage 1: Tim Merlier show as Soudal Quick-Step rider dominates sprint to take comfortable victory

Stage one of the 2026 Eneco Tour was very much the Tim Merlier show as the Belgian showed a stunning show of power, launching his sprint with a huge acceleration before holding off the rest in an enduring final 100 metre sprint.
After an exhilarating opening evening saw just seven seconds separate the top fifteen rider, Jakob Soderqvist took the leader's jersey following the 3.1-kilometre prologue. However, the majority of riders remain in contention for the overall as 70 riders find themselves at 20 seconds or less off the pace.
But first, the sprinters looked set to have their day on Wednesday's stage one as a mostly flat and short 120-kilometre stage saw a chance for the fast men. At the start line included Tim Merlier, Christophe Laporte, Dylan Groenewegen, Pavel Bittner and young Red Bull prospect Davide Donati.
The day largely went on script from the beginning as three riders went up the road as the sprinter's teams settled into a chase. An all-Dutch breakaway got over three minutes at its peak and featured Luke Verburg, Rick Ottema and Johan Dorussen.

Final lap sees breakaway's lead fall
Taking place over three laps of a circuit, the break's lead was down to less than a minute with the final passage of the line signalling just 40-kilometres to go. With the main favourites among their ranks, Red Bull, Soudal Quick-Step and Picnic PostNL appeared to share much of the work in the bunch.
Quick-Step did most of the work at the front of the bunch in the final lap, keeping the breakaway in check as they brought the attackers back with 11 kilometres to go. From there on, lead-out trains battled for position on the course's narrow roads.
A fast and furious final kilometres saw the bunch tackle junctions and roundabouts in a battle for position, including a tight left-hand turn with over 300 metres to go followed by a slight uphill drag to the line - which riders have already seen twice over the course of the day.
Inside the final kilometre, Dylan Groenewegen was brought to the front for the corner as the riders set in for a sprint. But Tim Merlier surged to victory to win by multiple bike lengths in a stunning show of power. Groenewegen took second as Gerben Thijssen took third. Jakob Soderqvist stays in the leader's jersey ahead of stage two.

What I notice more are the ones who were at the world tour and kept going on the pro tour level for that little bit longer, still wanting to ride after their bodies had aged, after their teams no longer needed them. - Cyclocross is nothing without stars like MVDP, WVA, Pidcock... etc. Out of all cycling disciplines, road racing is the most popular discipline in professional cycling, especially in terms of global prestige, major-event audiences, and the historical status of its greatest riders. People that don't follow cycling as a sport have heard of Merckx, Hinault, Pantani, Armstrong, Remco, Vingegaard, MvDP, Van Aert, Pogačar etc. So if we're talking about professional cycling and the sport's most famous athletes, road racing is the clear number one. Road cycling's greatest champions are judged across such a wide scale. E.g. - Pogačar can win the Tour de France and then go after Paris–Roubaix and other prestigious one day races. These races also have a wide range of versatility: cobbles, gravel, punchy, hilly, TT. This versatility is a huge part of why road racing is No.1 in cycling.
