The biggest news of the entire transfer season may have hit right on its very first days too as Remco Evenepoel was officialized as a new Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe rider from the 2026 season onwards. Whilst this is a massive signing with many underlying conditions and details, most are still not publicly known, but it is possible to access that likely the Belgian will move on from his current coach at Soudal - Quick-Step.
Evenepoel has been for several months in a position of doubt regarding his future with Soudal - Quick-Step, publicly speaking. Neither the team or Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe opened up their cards to the media over the last few months regarding the true depth of the negotiations Evenepoel had been in already before the start of the 2025 Tour de France.
Over the Tour sources such as Daniel Benson, Ciro Scognamiglio and La Dernière Heure have all reported - accurately - that a deal was almost fully agreed on already by the time the race started, and then that it was signed during the rest day following the Belgian's withdrawal from the race. Whilst both teams denied the reports, they appear to be fully accurate taking into consideration the timeline following the race.
As soon as the Tour finished BORA dispatched both Rolf Aldag and Enrico Gasparotto from the team with immediate effect, a massive change in it's staff as both men had just come off the Tour de France where the team achieved an historic podium with Florian Lipowitz. This combined with the addition also with immediate effect of former Belgian national coach Sven Vanthourenhout was a clear sign that an agreement had been reached with Evenepoel and it was only a matter of time before it would be announced.
But perhaps not many expected this to happen already on the 5th of April, as both teams prepared a statement for the same time, also making it clear that it had been in the works for a long time. Evenepoel is said to be joined by Mattia Cattaneo, DS Klaas Lodewyck as well as two other staff members from Soudal - Quick-Step. Most certainly these will be announced over the coming weeks or months.
On the other hand Evenepoel's coach Koen Pelgrim, a very vocal voice in the media for several years, should not make the move alongside him. According to Het Laatste Nieuws Evenepoel also won't be coached by Marc Lamberts who came alongside Primoz Roglic to BORA back in the end of 2023 but instead Dan Lorang. It remains to be seen whether this change in training work could see Evenepoel grow further as a rider or potentially stagnate in his current position.
