"Relieved that we survived this stage unscathed" - Jonas Vingegaard safely through chaotic day at Itzulia Basque Country

On a day full of incident and crashes, Jonas Vingegaard was thankfully able to escape unscathed as he keeps up his hopes of overall victory at Itzulia Basque Country 2024.

"I am relieved that we survived this stage unscathed," reflected Team Visma | Lease a Bike sports director Frans Maassen to the team website afterwards. "The rain and the slippery roads proved to be very dangerous. It was a stressful day, but I'm glad we were able to finish it trouble-free. In the end, Loe van Belle did a great job in keeping Jonas out of trouble."

With the longest stage of the race up next and six categorised climbs on the day, Vingegaard, who sits fifth in the general classification, could fancy his chances of making a difference.
