Primoz Roglic has won the opening prologue of the Itzulia Basque Country and ever since Jumbo-Visma have been strangling the peloton with it's collective strength to prevent rivals from taking time on the race leader. Today Jumbo were again attacked, but arrived to the finale safely and in control.
As Jonas Vingegaard controlled the attack of Julian Alaphilippe and Daniel Martínez - who ended first and second on the stage - in Vivero, Roglic managed to keep it together on the steep slopes, and later targeted the sprint: "Of course I would have liked to win, but I lacked a bit of luck today. It was a tough day with a lot of attacks and action on the last climb. Jonas and I really pushed it to the finish."
Roglic is heading into the final two stages of the race in the lead. Tomorrow's stage into Mallabia will see a tough ramp towards the finale after a difficult set of climbs spread throughout the day, whilst Saturday's stage sees the riders go up the Alto de Arrate twice in what is a brutal stage - one that decided the GC last year, in favour of the Slovenian.
"Tomorrow we have a lot of mountains to cross and the finish is on top of a steep climb. Hopefully I have good legs and I can go up with the best. We will do everything we can to keep the yellow jersey," he concluded.
