Arguably the greatest Grand Tour rider of the modern era to not win the Tour de France, Primoz Roglic starts another quest for the Maillot Jaune this Saturday afternoon. Whether or not the Slovenian is successful in winning the Tour however, he has still had a legendary career regardless.
"I’m happy. I mean, you know, it’s always unfair to really judge how good — or how not good — you are. The fact is, we are here. I mean, I’m here with my guys, so we’re just looking forward to doing the best we can," explains Roglic to ITV Sport from the start line of the Grand Depart for 2025 in Lille. "That’s the priority, and that’s the goal."
With a record equalling four Vuelta a Espana wins on his palmares, and a Giro d'Italia win from 2023, the Tour de France is the only Grand Tour missing for Roglic. As already mentioned however, the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe leader is keen to point out that regardless of if his wins the Maillot Jaune or not, his career has been incredibly successful.
"If I’m honest, I don’t care, you know. Like, I mean, picturing this or that… like I already said, you know, whether I have ten Tours de France or one or none, it’s not going to turn my career around. It’s not going to change it," he summarises honestly. "I’ve won some races. I’m f*cking proud of it. And we’ll just try to enjoy it here."
The first test of Roglic and the other GC contenders this Tour, will be to safely navigate a tricky opening week. "If we knew the recipe, then everybody would probably do it. But for us — yes — we have some options. It’s probably also good for our team to have a sprinter who can do well today and in the other sprint stages. That helps us a lot as a team," he concludes. "We just try to do our best."
