UAE Team Emirates are bolstering their mountain lineup. Tim Wellens and Felix Grossschartner were confirmed to be joining the team in the last few days, but the team has now chased and signed a pure climber who will have a domestique role in the mountains in Domen Novak.
The transfer doesn't come as a surprise, with rumours of the move coming as early as the Tour of Slovenia where the Bahrain - Victorious was on a direct battle with Tadej Pogacar and Rafal Majka, and went on to complete the podium alongside his two future teammates. His consistent level in the high mountains of the Giro d'Italia over the last few years and his links to two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar have proved to be the decisive factors for this move.
“Novak is a rider who has shown good progression in his years as a professional and we feel he can provide good qualities to the team, especially in the mountains," team CEO Mauro Gianetti said in a press release. "He has many years under his belt at World Tour level and we believe he has a lot to offer our team in the years ahead".
After Dylan Teuns, Bahrain now lost another of it's riders who can perform in the mountains. Novak played a crucial support role for Pello Bilbao at the 2020 Giro d'Italia, and for the Basque duo of Bilbao and Mikel Landa this year. He also went on to finish the queen stage to Passo Fedaia in second place, almost completing what was a successful Grand Tour tilt. He joins UAE on a two-year contract.
