As Stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia continues, two major
classifications have effectively been decided.
Mads Pedersen has mathematically
secured the Maglia Ciclamino (points jersey), while
Lorenzo Fortunato has
clinched the Maglia Azzurra (King of the Mountains) title.
Pedersen, who dominated the first week of racing with three
stage wins in the opening nine days, now sits on four victories in total, and
could yet add a fifth in Sunday’s finale in Rome. His consistency across sprint
and intermediate stages has given him an unassailable lead in the points
classification, providing he finishes the race.
Meanwhile, Fortunato reached 355 points in the mountains
classification during today’s stage, putting him over 150 points clear of his
nearest rival, Scaronni. Barring any withdrawal, the jersey is his through to
Rome, marking a spectacular achievement in a Giro where Fortunato has been a
constant force on the climbs.
