After Bahrain Victorious revealed their shocking new time trial helmet at Tirreno-Adriatico and Paris-Nice, the UCI have raised concerns over the safety of the Rudy Project Windgream HL 85 helmet, as they said in a statement that it “focuses more on performance than the primary function of a helmet, namely to ensure the safety of the wearer in the event of a fall”.
This comes after the world governing body announced that they had banned the head sock on Specialized’s TT5 time trial helmet and had launched reviews into the equally shocking Giro Aerohead ll and POC Tempor helmets, as well as the Rudy Project Windgream HL 85.
In response to the UCI’s concerns, Bahrain Victorious sports director Milan Eržen said “Rudy Project, not us, went through all the procedures, the crash test and everything. There’s no way we would race with a helmet that’s not been through the tests”.
The helmet had been approved by the UCI roughly ten days prior to its first appearance in a WorldTour event at Tirreno-Adriatico, with Eržen stating that “our helmet is by the rules. We sent for approval with the UCI, and we got approval. That’s it”.
