“Of course a podium would have been the icing on the cake” - Alexey Lutsenko content with eighth place finish at Liège-Bastogne-Liège

Having come into Liège-Bastogne-Liège in good form after taking the overall victory at the Giro d’Abruzzo the week before, Alexey Lutsenko put in a strong performance at La Doyenne, as he finished in eighth place, his best result in a Monument of his career.

Speaking to his team after the race, Lutsenko praised the work of his fellow Astana Qazaqstan riders, as he said “my teammates were incredible today. Simone Velasco and Christian Scaroni helped me to keep my position and moved me in front before La Redoute, the main climb where, actually, the race started. In the beginning it was Igor Chzhan, who did a great job for me, an invisible job on TV, but an important one for the team”.

The Kazakh rider will be hoping to continue to carry his form into his next race at the Tour de Romandie this week, as he went on to say “I am really happy with the team today and now I am leaving for the Tour de Romandie, where I’d like to continue pursuing a good result. Well, a top-10 is a good result, but of course a podium would have been the icing on the cake”.
