The Volta ao Algarve race started today and will run until next Sunday, February 23rd. However, I think it's fair to say that the race has definitely got off on the wrong foot.

Today's stage from Portimão to Lagos had one of the most bizarre finishes in recent years. In what was expected to be a sprint finish including several of the great stars of today's cycling, we ended up with complete chaos when more than half the peloton ended up entering the finishing straight in the wrong direction due to a lack of proper signalling.

Filippo Ganna ended up claiming victory in the midst of so much confusion after being one of the few to cross the finish line on the correct route. Or did he? No! The race organizers later confirmed that the results of the first stage had been annulled.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the day didn't end there! Shortly after the end of the stage, according to information from Correio da Manhã, two GNR motorcycles that were deployed to monitor the race ended up in an accident on the A22, near the Odiáxere area.

The two soldiers, aged 32 and 35, were assisted at the scene and transported to Portimão hospital with minor injuries. The accident happened at around 6pm and 20 operatives attended the scene, with support from the Lagos Volunteer Fire Brigade, INEM, GNR and the Via do Infante concessionaire.
