On Wednesday, the news broke of the concerning disappearance of Óscar Freire, shocking the entire cycling world. The three-time world champion had been missing since Monday. For this reason, his family reported him missing to the Guardia Civil, only to find out 17 hours later that Freire was fine.
Faced with this strange case, Oscar Freire himself and his family released a statement, explaining what happened. It has been made clear that everything was due to an internal family matter. "We regret the concern that the news of the temporary disappearance of Oscar Freire may have caused and at the same time we are grateful for the interest shown by the fans and the press in general," reads the statement. In addition, as published by EFE, Oscar Freire regrets the repercussion "of a personal and intimate issue" and asks for respect for what happened.
By this, the three-time world champion is apparently referring to an internal dispute. According to La Gazzeta dello Sport, on Monday, Oscar Freire had an argument with his wife and left home alone with his car. He left a note for her, saying she was right: "I'm useless", and "now you can be calm".
48 hours after that, the wife of the three-time world champion, very worried, reported the disappearance to the Guardia Civil. 17 hours later, Oscar's brother, Antonio Freire, declared that everything was fine, that the three-time world champion's lack of communication was due to the fact that he did not have his cell phone. At all times, the Guardia Civil seemed to know that Oscar Freire was fine. In the first hours after he was reported missing, some security cameras near his home had recorded his presence.
In addition, the concern in his family grew after the first information that Freire had already been found, when this was not the case. It was not until 20:30 on Wednesday evening that it was confirmed for sure that the former cyclist was well. The COPE received the confirmation in his program: Tiempo de Juego, after he returned home.
