As seen by VRT, and shared by Sporza, it was able to confirm that Maxim van Gils rider is training with his national team's equipment in Mallorca - the best one he is allowed and has available. But the reason for it is actually quite interesting, and not based on team rules from any side...
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe are out training this week in the Spanish island. CyclingUpToDate has been able to observe and talk to multiple riders who are under contractual obligations that are one of cycling's most quirky situations. Riders are training with their new teammates, in their new bikes...
But some are not allowed to talk public ally until the 1st of January; others are allowed to talk publicly but are forbidden to be shown with their new team colours/equipment; whilst others are allowed to do all this but are forced to ride on bikes from their new teams without stickers and logos. All depends on the teams that they have a contract with until the end of the 2024 year and what they request to their new teams.
Van Gils however terminated his contract with Lotto Dstny, a mutual agreement, so he is not forced to ride in Lotto Dstny's colours or equipment - most likely, he cannot. He is allowed to do so with Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's equipment but the German team actually ran out of stock. Their new jersey for 2025 was revealed yesterday, and there may have been a clash between their stock and a bad coincidence regarding van Gils' late signing. So for the time being, the 25-year old is training in the Belgian national team's colours.
Today Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe will host media day, and we should learn more about van Gils' current situation, plans for 2025 as well as the same from many of his teammates.
