Mathias Bregnhøj joins Portugal's leading team - Sabgal / Anicolor for 2024

Mathias Bregnhøj is another big name to join the Sabgal / Anicolor Cycling Team for the coming season. He had a dream season in 2023, with four victories in top-level UCI races and a total of 282 UCI points.

It's his first time racing in Portugal and he guarantees that he's coming to win races in Portuguese territory. A powerful all-rounder with a "strong engine" and great endurance, he assumes that the harder the race, the better. This signing reflects the team's short-term goal of creating a Portuguese cycling team of reference on the international stage.

Mathias Bregnhøj, 28, is undoubtedly a good climber, but he also knows how to defend himself in individual efforts (time trial), which makes him very strong, as he already has a number of victories in this specialty in his portfolio.

Bregnhøj comes from the Leopard TOGT Pro Cycling Team, where in 2023 he achieved excellent results such as winning the overall of the Tour of Olympia, an important stage race held in the Netherlands. He won Stage 2 of the French Circuit des Ardennes and then the General Classification of this stage race. He also won the 3rd stage of the Flèche du Sud and placed 5th in the Danish National Championships. He was also 8th in the 2.Pro PostNord Tour of Denmark race.

Speaking to the club's official website, Mathias Bregnhøj gives us his words: "I'm very happy with the opportunity given to me by Rúben Pereira and Carlos Pereira when I was left without a team. I'm very happy with what I've found and the strong structure provided by the team and I hope we can grow together and achieve our ambitions. I'm looking forward to racing in Portugal and internationally with the team and especially hope to play an important role in the Volta a Portugal with this strong structure."

Rúben Pereira, DS of Sabgal / Anicolor, praised the Dane and gave his opinion on the athlete: "Mathias Bregnhøj is a cyclist we've been following for about a year now, a racer who has already piqued my interest, not just this year, but last year. He's developed a lot over the last three years and had an incredible 2023, where he won high-level races such as Olympia's Tour and the Ardennes Circuit. He's a rider who will bring a lot to our team, because he fits in like a glove with Portuguese cycling and our structure. He will undoubtedly be one of our team's references."

"He's a very versatile cyclist, who can win as well as give away wins, a strong man who works hard and will also get his chances. I think Mathias will really be a pleasant surprise for the upcoming 2024 season. He defends himself well on all terrains, in the medium and high mountains, he rides well in the time trials, he's fast, very combative, with a very aggressive way of racing, a perfect characteristic for our cycling. I think he'll be one of the stars of next season and he'll certainly surprise us with his performance."
