Mass crash heavily damages peloton | Medical Report & Fines - Vuelta a Espana 2022 stage 18

The 18th stage of the Vuelta a Espana delivered a lot of dramatic action, with the GC fight opening up very early on with an attack from João Almeida who forced the climbers to have a long day out on the attack. Robert Gesink just narrowly misses the stage win as he was caught inside the final kilometer, beaten by Remco Evenepoel who kept the red jersey and Enric Mas.

The day saw a very heavy crash early on which caused a lot of damage in the peloton. The medical report features:

188 - Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck). Open fracture of the left wrist. Abandoned.

86 - Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers). Polycontusions. Road rash in scapular region, shoulder, elbow, forearm, left hip and knee.

75 - Quentin Pacher (Groupama - FDJ). Polycontusions and road rash. Incised-contused wound on left elbow.

138 - Louis Vervaeke (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team). Wound on left hand.

161 - Julien Bernard (Trek - Segafredo). Road rash in left elbow and knee.

7 - Sam Oomen (Jumbo-Visma). Road rash in left forearm.

As for fines, they were given to the following:

175 - João Almeida: Getting rid of a bidon outside waste area. 500CHF and 25 UCI points fine.

81 - RIchard Carapaz: Getting rid of a bidon outside waste area. 500CHF and 25 UCI points fine.

71 - Thibaut Pinot: Getting rid of a bidon outside waste area. 500CHF and 25 UCI points fine.

173 - Ivo Oliveira: Sticky bottle. 200CHF fine.

UAE Team Emirates DS Manuele Mori: Sticky bottle. 200CHF fine.
