Marijn van den Berg has been riding in the professional peloton for a while, but it was 2023 that was considered his real breakthrough year. The Dutch rider achieved his first victory at WorldTour level in Poland this year. Moreover, Van den Berg made his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a España. In cycling podcast De Grote Plaat, the Dutchman looked back on his last few months.
Van den Berg kicked off his season victorious at Trofeo Ses Salines - Alcudia (1.1) in January, then he added stage win at Route d'Occitanie shortly before his big achievement during Tour de Pologne. "I was really happy with that victory in Poland," Van den Berg exults in the talk show.
"I still had something left, although I never thought I would win with such a huge lead," he then refers to the big difference with 'runner-up' Matej Mohoric.
What exactly are Van den Berg's plans for 2024? "Our programs are drawn up in December. I will definitely take a look at the Tour de France route," he says. "In any case, I definitely feel in the right place with this team. I have often been advanced as an important pawn, there are Dutch people to spar with and I can develop well there. Last year the team expected me to get involved in pure bunch sprints, but that's not my thing. They are now better aware that my strength lies in the slightly more difficult stages, with some climbs in the final."
