Luke Lamperti was on the verge of his first pro victory just four days into his WorldTour career.
Soudal - Quick-Step's talented sprinter won the bunch sprint behind the lone leader Finn Fisher-Black on Friday.
"It’s always nice to be on the podium, but as a team we want to win," Lamperti told Velo. "Finn was really strong on the climb, so fair play to him because we couldn’t bring him back."
"It definitely means a lot to come in and perform quite quick in the races and yet also have a good start," Lamperti said. "This is a really nice way to start in the team. So far it’s been a nice season and hopefully we can continue."
"We could see him go. The climbs are pretty long and straight here so we could see him the whole way," Lamperti said of Fisher-Black’s move. "He was really strong. We rode a bit on the downhill, but you can’t bring back much time there on the downhill."
