The Bora - hansgrohe rider claimed the win on the final stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia today and marked his return to competition after a rough period, leaving behind the doubts and confirming his return to top form with the win atop Chiclana de Segura today.
"I’m super happy to take this win today! The team did a really good job today and especially Emanuel and Frederik have worked very hard in the breakaway so I could launch the decisive attack on the last climb," Kämna said in the team's press release. Emanuel Buchmann and Frederik Wandahl both played a crucial role in the German climber's win, after he took a break from cycling last year due to physical and mental issues that developed after an infection.
On stage three of the race he put in a set of digs as he looked for the stage win, and after his late attack failed to succeed he purposefully rode to the finish almost in a standstill in order to loose time and gain freedom to join breakaways, as he did here. As luck would have it he soon capitalized on the win, infiltrating the decisive move late into the stage and then from the breakaway group, manage to put in a strong attack to capture his first win of the year.
"After my break last year it’s the perfect start into a new season and I’m really looking forward to the next races," he completed.
BORA almost had a triple victory day, after Sergio Higuita won the final stage of the Volta ao Algarve and Sam Bennett marked his return to the team with a second place at the opening stage of the UAE Tour. After achieving his initial goal, Kämna will now head to France where he will tackle the Faun-Ardèche and Drome classics, and should be one of the favourites.
