It was never a threatening attack when it came to it's chances of chasing a stage win. BORA - hansgrohe, INEOS Grenadiers and Team Jayco AlUla did the bulk of the chasing.
The duo was eventually caught with 20 kilometers to go, as the peloton prepared to begin an acceleration towards the hilly finale of the stage into Lobethal.
The peloton approached the penultimate climb of the day and there Soudal - Quick-Step raised the peloton's pace, beginning to split it up. It was Luke Plapp who took to the front with around 500 meters to the top, not looking back and creating a key gap as only Jhonatan Narváez managed to follow the pace. The duo went over the top in the head of the race with a reduced peloton behind.
However the duo did not collaborate and were caught with 6 kilometers to go, a big peloton came back together with a few attacks surging. In the final hilltop Bastien Tronchon and Quinn Simmons launched off the front with 4 kilometers to go. The duo were only reeled in inside the final kilometer, as Isaac del Toro attacked off the front.
It was nothing but an incredible attack, perfectly timed he managed to get enough of a gap to hold off the sprinters who then furiously chased. The Mexian won on the day, Corbin Strong and
Stephen Williams finished second and third for Israel - Premier Tech.
