In March Juan Sebastián Molano was the victim of a head-on collision with a vehicle whilst on a training ride in Belgium. He took several months to return to competition, and it gave extra meaning to an otherwise expected victory at the Vuelta a Burgos.
“I’m quite emotional after this win. I had a few very difficult months after my crash earlier in the year and I have to thank my family, girlfriend and the team for their support on my road back to competition," Molano said in a post-race interview. "To do it in this way with a victory after such a good performance from my teammates to set it up is amazing and I’m so happy.”
UAE had the strongest leadout present in the race but despite this struggled to put the Colombian in the right spot into the final sprint. He was close to the front nevertheless and in the run-up to the line in the city center of Burgos, he was by far the fastest and managed to go through the rest of the competition to take his first win since the accident.
UAE Team Emirates has travelled to Burgos with Adam Yates and Jay Vine to fight for the overall classification whilst Molano had the task to win on the only day suited to the sprinters. With that goal out of the way, today he will form part of the team time-trial which will be an important day for the GC.
