Three men forced their way into the breakaway on the day, but with around 40km to go, their day out on the attack had already come to an end. With the race back together on the penultimate climb before the line, the big names came to fore with Juan Ayuso, Mattias Skjelmose, Felix Gall and Romain Gregoire showing strong legs.
With 5km to go, it was those aforementioned four that lead by over a minute from their nearest chasers, meaning victory was all but assured for one of them. In the end, it was Ayuso who led the group home ahead of Gregoire and Skjelmose.
