Milano-Sanremo will be
Mathieu van der Poel's first race of the 2024 season. In 2022 he started his spring campaign at the Italian monument with a third place, and there will begin a spring that tackles the cobbled monuments and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
After conquering another cyclocross world title, the
Alpecin-Deceuninck rider had some holidays in the Alps and travelled back to Spain to finish his preparation for the road season. Long hours on the bike but also some intensity. The Dutchman, like Wout van Aert, will not race Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico, but also skips Strade Bianche and will begin his season at Milano-Sanremo straight away. This is reported by In de Leiderstrui's Tom van der Salm.
What will follow his the cobbled classics block afterwards; he will compete at the
E3 Saxo Classic which is the most important preparation race for the
Tour of Flanders. He will race Gent-Wevelgem but not Dwars door Vlaanderen. Van der Poel will race the Tour of Flanders and
Paris-Roubaix as two very important goals in his spring.
Afterwards already doesn't follow a resting period. He returns to
Amstel Gold Race where he gloriously took a victory in 2019 and should be among the main favourites; before also returning to Liège-Bastogne-Liège where he will hope to hunt for the fourth monument to his palmarès.
